According to NACS, 84.8% of frozen beverage sales in c-stores are from slush. It is Frazil’s understanding that these industry numbers from NACS do not included data from DSD providers. As such, the percent of the market attributed to slush is very likely overstated. However, both years will have a similar baseline level of data for changes in store consumption, and so the YoY difference in the sub-category can help us understand directional changes in consumption across these stores. This shows that FUB/slush is significantly increasing YoY across the c-store industry, and driving category expansion

So why is FUB growing faster than FCB in the c-store channel?
  1. FUB is preferred to FCB for most adults. Slush is a more substantive, refreshing, and flavorful drink. Adults prefer that premium drink experience to the drink experience of FCB, which is comprised of 50% CO2 (as stated by FBD, the equipment manufacturer).
  2. Quality drives category expansion. Frazil is resetting expectations for the category. Many adults gave up on slush years ago due to a poor experience with a high fructose corn syrup experience from brands that aren’t obsessed with flavor quality. As more adults try Frazil, they’re realizing that this category is incredibly delicious and refreshing, and loyalty to the category increases.
  3. Frazil’s “bundle” program, which supplies the FUB equipment and covers the service cost of the machine, allows retailers to enter this high-profit category with ZERO risk and no capital requirements. This has allowed slush to be offered in significantly more places than before and has been the primary driver of FUB-specific expansion in the c-store channel.

Slush is a classic party of the c-store experience. Having it in your store, and getting it right, will be more and more important as this category continues to grow in preference among consumers across the US.
